It looks like as of end of this month, booster vaccines will be available for care home residents and at risk patients. This is a U-turn for the government, but the number of people who are doubly vaccinated and getting infected with Covid-19 is rising. The current average number of cases is 875 (-4%) compared to the previous week.

The department of migration looked into claims made by Amnesty International that asykum seekers were being systematically brutalised in Swiss refugee centres. The claims were found to be only partially true with three cases being reported. Claiming that it is three cases too many the department has put in place a set of measures to ensure that asylum seekers are treated with dignity.

This winter there is a risk that Switzerland will face an energy shortage. The cost of energy is rising steadily in Europe and, wanting to be prepared, politicians are putting forward various solutions, including a mini-nuclear plant known as a “small modular reactor”, which is regarded as the most “eco-friendly” of solutions.

Meanwhile the canton of Lucerne has announced that it will invest 56,2 million francs in climate change control strategies over the next 4 years. If nothing is done to prevent climate change, temperatures are set to rise by 4° Celsius by 2060 in Switzerland, which is above the global average. One of the goals will be to lower the CO2 emissions from, currently, 2.3 tons to 0.4 tons by 2050. The full details of the canton’s strategy will be discussed in the local parliament in January.
