Znüni News – Tuesday November 9

It has been spoken about for years, the dream of building a mega ski resort linking Engelberg to Melchsee-Frutt and Meiringen Hasliberg. Three years ago a feasibility study was commissioned and the results have just been published. The project is feasible and would cost CHF 50 million to achieve. It would link Melchsee-Frutt to Hasliberg and Engelberg to Frutt via the Jochpass Engstlen station. The goal is not to bring more guests to the region but to entice the guests to stay longer. Environmental organisations are against this idea, claiming that the impact on nature and flora has not been studied enough and no alternative to this new mega ski area was explored.

The Luzern Fasnacht Committee may have announced that Fasnacht would take place with processions next year, but the town has not officially approved the concept. The committee had based their announcement on the marathon which took place 10 days ago, where participants had to show their certificate but spectators did not. The town, however, is countering that the comparison was a bit easy. During Fasnacht, spectators usually consume alcohol during the processions and the crowd tends to stand really close to one another making it hard to keep social distancing. In short, Fasnacht 2022 is not a given.

Unemployment sank to 2.5% from 2.6% nationally in October. This is because the economy is recovering well after the lockdowns. There is still a huge need for staff in hotels, cafés and restaurants for anyone looking for work.

15 000 shows and cultural events were cancelled in 2021 as a consequence of the pandemic. This, because the requirements to operate safely were often too drastic and costly for the event organisers. Not so for the Lucerne World Theatre Company, who after having to cancel last year’s show is happy to be back with a brand new production entitled “The Twisted Tales of a Toothless Monster”. This is their annual Christmas show and the company has managed to keep to the rules by reducing the number of spectators and making it a Covid certified event. As the only English speaking theatre company in Lucerne with no subsidies to help finance it, they need the community to show their support by going to the see the show.
