Znüni News – Tuesday May 18

The World Economic Forum has had a turbulent 18 months. Originally planned to take place in Davos, this was then changed to Lucerne, then changed again for Singapore this August. Now this event has now been cancelled and it is unclear whether next year’s event will take place in Davos or Singapore or at all… This would be a blow to Switzerland, which likes to think of itself as an important partner to the international business community. The event also bring CHF 90 million in revenue to the country.

Last Friday the MS Europa spectacularly collided with the Seebrücke, leading to damage on its back deck. Luckily noone was injured in the accident. The captain blames the strong current in the Reuss as well as the narrow space they have to manoeuvre in. The ship should be up and running again for this weekend.

Meanwhile a petition is circulating to save the MS Mythen from being retired and taken to pieces. If you want to keep the old timer on the lake you can sign the petition here.

Finally researchers at the ETH of Zürich, and the universities of Bern, Lausanne and Cork have found the Covid-19 virus weak spot. It involves its “frameshifting”, i.e. folding its NRA in a particular way to infect other cells, at least I think that’s what it does. They are hoping to be able to find a way to disrupt this process and destroy the virus. If you want to find out more, here is the ETH’s article on the topic.

Here is a video purpoting to show how the virus cell functions. Not sure I get it, but it’s kind of pretty to watch…

The eagle eyed readers may have noticed I got my dates mixed up yesterday! Apologies for that. Today definitely is May 18th!
