Znüni News – Monday August 20

Today is back to normal for most families, as children are heading back to the local school. Living in Luzern is back too after a restful summer break. And what a wonderful summer it was pretty much regardless of where you vacationed. Switzerland had an incredible spell of beautiful hot weather that led to fire and fireworks ban – with a potential fine of CHF 20 000.- for breaking the rules. People flocked to the lakes, many renting boats for the day, sometimes incurring the wrath of the cruise ships, such as the man who decided to anchor in the middle of the cruise route and nearly got run down by the steamboat. In the end he literally dropped his anchor and fled the scene as fast as possible.

On a more serious note, this summer two airplanes crashes caused several fatalities in Switzerland: one near Emmenbrücke where four people died and one with an old timer plane which cost the lives of 20 people.

Overall 29 000 people went to the open air cinema over the summer and the Blue Balls festival also was a huge success – nothing to compare with the 1 million people who turned up in Zürich for the Street Parade in the summer.

The summer feeling is far from over and yesterday over 400 people took part in the Seeüberquerung swim across the lake. The best time to swim from the Lido to Tribschen was just under 17 minutes.

This Saturday was also the 25th anniversary of the fire which destroyed most of the Kappelbrücke. Apparently the town is considering commissioning contemporary artist to create new paintings to put up on the bridge.

But today is back to reality and commuters were frustrated when work scheduled to finish last night on the rail tracks between Ebikon and Luzern are now scheduled to only end tomorrow morning, meaning that anyone wishing to travel to Zürich must go via Olten.
