Znüni News – Tuesday August 21

Commuters who were dismayed to see that the trains between Luzern and Ebikon were not running yesterday were in for a nasty surprise this morning, as the trains continue to not run until at least 9 a.m. this morning. This is because a wagon derailed on Sunday afternoon and this delayed the works. Although rail traffic should resume today during the day, expect rerouting every evening from 9.50 p.m. until 5.20 a.m. until September 8th!

The heat wave will continue until tomorrow with temperatures reaching 30 degrees again today. This has dramatic consequences on fish who are dying because of the warmer waters. When the water temperature reaches 23° Celsius, the fish begin to show signs of stress; 25° is enough to kill them. Currently the lake is over 25° warm but in Luzern a special effort is being made to try and save the fish and 10 000 fish were transported from the warmer waters into cooler rivers; more fish removals are planned this week. In Schaffhausen over 1 tonne of fish was found dead because of the warm water temperatures.
