Znüni News – Friday October 29

Energy production and consumption is one of the main topic of the future and Switzerland is warning that there is a possibility of, sporadically, running out electricity as of 2025. Switzerland is dependent on Europe for most of its electricity with 41 electric cables linking it to other countries. In some cases, such as Italy, it is to bring electricity from Germany to Italy that the cables are there, in other cases to store the electricity but also supply to our national energy grid. In short, were Europe to run out of energy so would Switzerland. Switzerland is focusing on building up renewable energy infrastructures within the country, but this takes time.

One innovative solution has been created in the Tessin where a large energy vault made out of concrete is exciting the world. The vault is actually a very high tower, in which renewable energy can be stored and then extracted when needed. This project was financed in part by a Japanese company and has been praised the world over for offering viable solutions for the future.

For the next two days the parliament will be entirely feminine. For the second time there will be a “women’s session”, with 246 women from the whole country. Only few are politicians, the majority were selected to take part in the sessions. Several topics will be discussed, such a equality in work and politics, cheaper children’s care solution and tackling domestic violence amongst others.

The Lucerne Marathon will take place on Sunday and will mean that most streets downtown will be closed. The marathon begins and ends around the Transport Museum and goes all along the lake to Kastanienbaum and back, so plenty of opportunities to cheer runners along.
