Wonderful hike from Alpnachstad to Pilatus-Kulm

Thank you Claudia Förtig for this great information!

Probably most of you already explored the mount Pilatus from Kriens. But it is worth it to start from Alpnachstad. There you can take the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to the top.

The hike from the bottom of the mountain station (Pilatus-Kulm) is very long and exhausting. BUT there is a great option to start the hike from Ämsigen which is the first stop of the cogwheel railway.

The only thing you have to do is to inform the driver to stop there.

The hike from Ämsigen to the top is around 2 hours but I would recommend it without children as it is very steep. You will pass by happy cows hiding in the forest and see fascinating rock faces.

If you reach Pilatus-Kulm you will be rewarded with the most beautiful view of the Vierwaldstättersee. There you can also do some wonderful Panorama trails. They are perfect for families. If you are lucky you will see maybe some Capricorns.

The way back I would recommend to take the cogwheel railway.

At Alpnachstad, there is a big parking area. Or you can arrive by boat or train which is just a few steps away from the base of the mountain.

Don’t miss this wonderful hiking trail!
