The people have spoken and the U.K is set on leaving Europe but what does this mean for U.K. citizens living and working here?
First of all DON’T PANIC! It will take at least 2 years before any exit will take effect, so it will be business as usual if you are already working here.
Secondly the U.K. will be eager to enter into trade agreements with other countries and might possibly choose to join Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland as a member of the EFTA. In which case the same work permit rules will apply.
So before you start frantically looking into your family tree for any ancestor who might have come from another European country so that you may stay here, just remember that these things take time to come into effect. Look at the referendum in Switzerland which was voted on more than 2 years ago and which still hasn’t been implemented, and rest assured that you will not be made to leave the country any time soon.
