Znüni News – Wednesday January 20

The good news, the cases of covid-19 in retirement homes is declining, between stricter measures and more and more over 75s getting the vaccine it seems like a corner is being turned for that demographic group. However the cases of children and teenagers catching the new variant and leading to entire schools having to go into quarantine grows. Today news of cases of pupils as young as 9 having the new variant and infecting further children in Zürich, Kilchberg and Cham have been disclosed. The solution? According to the ministry of education it would be to make children in 5th and 6th classes wear masks, some schools have already put this in place. We will see if it becomes a nationwide rule.

A woman from Belgium decided to go skiing in Switzerland during the Christmas holidays, when she returned instead of going into quarantine (as was required), she picked her daughter up and sent her to school. Only the mother had been infected with the virus and (presumably unknowingly) passed it onto her daughter, who passed it onto a school colleague who passed it onto her mother who is a teacher. The final result when the woman found out she was positive with Covid-19? 5000 people have had to go into quarantine!

France is considering asking all foreigners (including from other European countries and Switzerland) who enter their territory to show a negative PCR test or have to quarantine for 7 days. The European countries will be meeting tomorrow to decide on a coordinated approach.
