Restaurants with a difference

St. Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and this is one of the busiest periods of the year for restaurants. If you are planning a night in but don’t feel like cooking, then check out our International takeaway restaurant’s post. If getting more food for your money is a priority then we’ve also done an all you can eat post. Maybe Brunch is more for you and we’ve also written about some of our favourite spots around town. We’ve covered quite a few restaurants so far but sometimes it’s nice to head somewhere that is a but less run of the mill. With this in mind we’re going to tell you about our favourite restaurants with a difference.

Unicum

Your paradise for chicken, meat and cheese! With the interior designed like the inside of a chicken coop, and the menu in local Luzerner dialect as well as High German and English, this restaurant certainly delivers a unique atmosphere to match its delicious food.

Grottino 1313

Finding Grottino 1313 is like stumbling upon an Aladdin’s cave. Tucked away in the Industriestrasse, the restaurant is warm and welcoming and the food very Italian and simply delicious; making this one of the locals’ favourite addresses so be sure to book (well in advance) before you turn up!

The Kitchen

The Kitchen comprises three venues in one: a burger/pizza joint offering mouth-watering Angus steak burgers and chunky fries at a very reasonable price. The Kitchen restaurant has a higher-end menu and the bar is a nice place to hang out after or before dinner. The decor is an eclectic mix of bistro and lounge making this a great hang-out for the urbanite.

Geissmatt

If you are looking for excellent home-style cooking then this is the place for you. With a new small menu every day made with fresh and local ingredients, friendly service, an old bistro feel and lots of goats imagery around, this restaurant manages to make you feel at home in no time and will have you going back again and again.

Barbatti

Now Italian restaurants are certainly plentiful around Luzern, however while the food in Barbatti is exquisite, it’s actually on this list due to it’s beautiful interior. Decorated by Lucerne artist Rolf Brem, elegant chandeliers are suspended from high ceilings, and a host of paintings and sculptures surround the walls. Of particular note is the series of heads sculptures above the door and the tiles of gold leafs adorning the walls. Helping to set the tone is an impressive, bold red Berkel meat slicer by the door. Any of their fresh pasta dishes is a must try along with the Rack of Lamb.

Gasthof Rössli

On the outskirts of Luzern, a team of chefs lead by Stefan Wiesner offer some of the most unique cooking in the region. Known as der Hexer, or The Sorcerer?, he uses regional, fresh and healthy products from locally surrounding fields, forests and waters to make innovative, creative menus for his guests. This includes using stones, hay, moss and anything that the land provides to create eight-course meals to please! And pleased are many including his official partner UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch.
