Lucerne School of Business – from “know how” to “can do”. Yes – there are bachelor and master programmes in English at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. And yes – students from all over the world can be found in lecture rooms bringing together research-based methods with applied practice.
The know-how provided by experienced professors and practitioners is systematically brought into different degree programmes. Since 1971 the Lucerne School of Business has also included entrepreneurship training in various modules. Students are challenged to connect with companies to bring them added value in different business subjects. Real-life cases have to be solved, and state-of-the-art presentations to company representatives have to be held. Potential investors join the lectures and perhaps discover promising start-ups in which they might invest. And if such a start-up, founded by students, wants to go further down the road to a market launch, an extensive support-programme is offered by the Lucerne School of Business – called ‘Smart-Up’. Coaching, infrastructure, motivational events and a solid network are offered as building blocks. The network includes direct contacts to the world of finance, technology, the law or communications and more.
Students are also challenged to contribute to the community in Central Switzerland. Both bachelor and master programmes include a combination of contact study, supervised self-study and self-directed learning. Lecturers, well-versed in theory and with a wealth of practical experience, are on hand to ensure that students receive the appropriate blend of inputs at master’s level. The current Business programmes taught in English are as follows:
- Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration, International Management & Economics
- Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration, Accounting, Finance & Banking
- Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration, Tourism (starting in 2017/18)
- Master of Science in Business Administration, Major in Business Development and Promotion
- Master of Science in Business Administration, Major in Tourism
- Master of Science in Banking and Finance
- Master of Science in International Financial Management
During the courses, students have the opportunity of spending a semester abroad as part of an exchange or study-abroad visit.
Besides a semester abroad, dual degrees can be finished at different levels. The students get the chance to complete two complementary degrees, one with a partner institution. The following dual degrees are at present available: dual degree options at bachelor and master levels at Edinburgh Napier University. Furthermore, negotiations with partner institutions in the US, Thailand and Hong Kong will shortly be concluded.
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts also offers interdisciplinary studies in partnership with the University of Lucerne and the University of Teacher Education Lucerne. These Interdisciplinary Learning Programmes (ISAs) offer a wide range of cultural, economic, technological, legal, and politically relevant courses. They are taught as modules and the content is designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and broaden horizons.
