Introducing our partner: Simon Varney MA / Psychological Counsellor

Sometimes life can throw up many challenges which cause a wave of emotions and considerably impact our thought life and general approach to life which can knock us off-kilt and adversely affect our everyday life and well-being. No matter how hard you try you can’t seem to get a secure footing in these difficult circumstances and it spills over into so many daily situations, affecting all forms of relationship. These are times when perhaps seeking additional support is needed from someone who can act as a buffer or psychological ‘first-aider’ to help you regain your equilibrium and sense of control over your life and overall mental health.

My therapeutic Approach:

Hello! My name’s Simon. I am a UK trained to Master’s level, native English-speaking counsellor/therapist practising at the Lilicentre in Luzern and Zug or online with 4 years of clinical experience helping adolescents & adults with a number of life’s challenges & concerns, ranging from stress & anxiety, relational issues, grief & loss to issues concerning self-esteem and overall identity. My goal in the counselling room is first and foremost to create a safe, secure, caring but relaxed environment where you feel heard, accepted, understood and empowered to live the life you want. My desire is to provide the right therapeutic conditions to aid clients to find their internal strength to change and rebuild key aspects of their life, overcome obstacles, internal blockages, so they can gradually restore themselves, their relationships and rediscover a real sense of hope for the future.

In my clinical work I work collaboratively with the client, walking beside the client, offering strong yet empathic support to clients as they come to understand and confront the complexities of life. I strive to provide a calm, compassionate approach, taking a unique interest in unique individuals with unique stories and history.

I adopt a holistic, integrative therapeutic approach, gearing my methodology and the therapeutic space to cater for the physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioural, relational, even spiritual needs the client is bringing at any given time. Moreover, my clinical work combines established best-practice, evidence-based interventions ranging from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapies, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), to more contemporary developments including compassion-focused therapy (CFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT) and key functional-, skills-based, solution-focused psychotherapies.

I understand that we can all have very different life experiences, priorities, hopes, concerns, and ways of seeing the world. Therefore, my overall approach is consistently undergirded by a person-centred ethos which focuses on the client’s individual experience, needs, personal growth and self-development, whilst also being based on a solid, trusting therapeutic relationship which governs the therapeutic process and outcome of therapy.

I am also passionate about understanding and aiding others going through cultural adjustment. Living abroad as an expat for over 25 years, mostly in Switzerland, I know first-hand the difficulties faced by individuals and families adjusting to a new country and way of life.
