61 people vanished in the cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden last year, but only a few were mentioned in the press. The police feel that involving the public is a last resort and they prefer to investigate the disappearances themselves before appealing to the public for help. When children are involved that is when the police share the news. Of the 61, half turned up of their own accord, some were found by the police, others were found dead and only 3 are still missing.

A German couple who carried out particularly violent robberies against 3 people and made away with CHF 620 000.- have been sentenced to 18 and 15 years in jail, which for Switzerland is considered a harsh sentence for robberies. The violent nature of the crimes (the victims were tied, gagged and threatened with death) may have been a contributing factor, although the defense lawyer argued that the robbers showed compassion by not killing their victims. Bizarrely the culprit tattooed the prosecutor lawyer’s name on his arm but couldn’t explain why he did so.

Our local police are now equipped with tasers, but up to know the police just threatening to use the taser on people seems to be enough to calm altercations.

The 80 year old robber who held up a bank in Meggen admitted to having already committed hold-ups in the area in 2012. It is still unclear what his motive was.
