Znüni News – Thursday November 11

Yesterday, the number of daily Covid-19 cases was the highest this year with 4150 new cases being recorded. That is 60% more cases than last week, meaning that now the number of cases are doubling every 10 days. The number of people being hospitalised with severe symptoms from Covid-19 has gone up by 19%, and of these roughly 90% have not been vaccinated. The national vaccination rate is around 65%, meaning that at least 1 million people remain unvaccinated.

The ongoing vaccination campaign continues throughout the country, but the free concerts offered in support of the campaign, have been sabotaged by anti-vaxxers booking the free tickets and then not showing up for the concerts.

The third booster campaign has begun with people over the age of 65, and at risk groups being encouraged to receive their boosters.

Calls for the return of free tests are growing louder in view of how virulent the Delta variant is proving to be, and there is now talk of this being the beginning of the 5th wave!

Migros is now officially allowed to sell alcohol. This is what was approved at the comapny’s national general assembly, however whether this will be put into practice or not remains to be seen. For many the fact that the supermarket does not sell alcohol seems to be seen as a positive thing.

Finally the circus is coming to town! Circus Knie, the best known Swiss circus, has decided to spend the month of December on the Allmend with the “Knies Weihnachtswelt” show. Expect a great show (without animals), a guaranteed Christmas ambience, raclette, mulled wine, as well as camel and pony rides for kids. The Knie family have a strong link to Lucerne having resided here for many decades.
