The LUGA came to a close yesterday. 115 000 visitors turned up to visit the farmer’s market, which is roughly the same number of visitors as last year. The big hit this year, apparently, was the army who were not only doing exercises in front of the entry hall but also offering culinary treats including ice creams, chili con carne, soups and cake pops. Next year the fair will take place from April 26 to May 5 and it will be the LUGA’s 40th anniversary so expect it to be even bigger and better!
A referendum is in the making asking for sidewalks to be reserved for pedestrians and putting bicycles back onto the road. Although it is illegal for bikes to be on sidewalks and you can be fined if caught, sometimes cities actually place the bike paths on the sidewalks to make way for car traffic. It will be interesting to see what comes of this.
The papers have been talking a lot about the Swiss Guard these past days. In case you don’t know about the Swiss Guard, it is a specialist military corp employed to protect the pope in Rome. Besides the main three requirements: to be a man, Catholic and Swiss, you also have to be prepared to stand around in colourful tights and costume and more often than not endure hours of selfies. More seriously the young men sign up for 26 months and are trained to be elite body guards. There currently are 135 guards and last weekend was when the 32 newest recruits were inducted in Rome. Several of the new recruits come from the canton of Lucerne hence the local press coverage.
