Znüni News – Monday August 31

This weekend‘s weather brought not only an abrupt end to the summer vibe we were enjoying, but also a month‘s worth of rain in a short amount of time, leading to floods and risk of mudslides in several cantons. Several streets were flooded (such as the Haldenstrasse near the Lido), as well as countless cellars. Luthern experience a flash flood bringing tons of debris from the mountains with it. The weather will calm down today but people should be cautious when travelling to the mountains.

A tragic accident happened in Will when a 4 year old boy fell into an open drainage shaft and was swept away by the strong current. He was able to be pulled to safety by firemen out of another shaft and rushed to hospital where he is in a critical condition.

For decades farmers used a fungicide called Chlorothalonil to fight a certain type of mould for potatoes and other vegetables. This fungicide has now been proven to cause cancer and, since beginning of this year, is no longer allowed. Problem solved? Not quite because it has seeped into the ground and is now polluting the water sources. This affects 8 water sources in the northern part of the canton, these will ne be used as drinkable water any time soon, but solutions have been found (such as importing water from other parts of the canton) to make sure that the tap water in this part of the canton remains drinkable.

Finally in football, the Young Boys from Zurich won the cup final against FC Basel, 2:1.

(Some readers have been wondering where I find our daily headlines, I read the Luzerner Zeitung, SRF, Zentralplus and the Pilatus Radio app, looking for headlines that I think might interest you – let me know if there are other topics you would like me to cover).
