Why the LiLi Centre Was Created

The Story Behind Lucerne’s Home for Community & Connection

In every city, there are places that become more than just physical spaces—they become anchors. For Lucerne’s international and local community, the LiLi Centre is exactly that: a home, a meeting point, and a bridge between cultures. But the Centre didn’t appear out of nowhere. It was born from a simple, powerful idea: life in a new country should feel easier, more connected, and more human.

A Vision Rooted in Real Needs

Ten years ago, the founders of the LiLi Centre noticed something essential. People arriving in Lucerne—whether for work, family, or adventure—weren’t just looking for information. They were looking for belonging. They needed a place where they could ask questions without feeling lost, practice the local language without fear, and meet others who understood the challenges of starting over in a new culture.

The Centre opened its doors with this mission at heart:
to make life in Lucerne more accessible, more joyful, and more connected for everyone navigating a new home.

From Grassroots Idea to Community Hub

In its early years, the LiLi Centre focused on the basics—German conversation groups, cultural exchanges, practical information sessions, and informal meetups. These simple gatherings quickly revealed something profound:

People didn’t just want services. They wanted community.

The Centre became a place where friendships formed over coffee, where newcomers found mentors, and where locals and internationals discovered common ground.

Building a Framework for Integration

As the community grew, so did the Centre’s understanding of what truly supports integration. This led to the creation of the 10 programme pillars, addressing everything from language and career to mental health, sustainability, and family life.

This structure allowed the Centre to expand while staying true to its mission:
helping people understand local culture, build meaningful connections, and feel at home in Lucerne.

A Lifeline in Times of Uncertainty

When the COVID‑19 pandemic hit, the LiLi Centre’s purpose became even clearer. Within weeks, activities moved online, support groups continued virtually, and the Centre became a steady anchor for people facing isolation, job uncertainty, and emotional strain.

The message was unmistakable: even when the world feels distant, community can remain close.

A Place Built by the Community, for the Community

Today, the LiLi Centre stands as one of Central Switzerland’s most vibrant community hubs. It thrives because people bring their skills, passions, and stories to it—teaching workshops, hosting events, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another.

Its mission remains beautifully simple:
to help people grasp local life, understand the culture, learn the language, and build meaningful connections along the way.

Why the LiLi Centre Exists

At its core, the LiLi Centre was created because:

  • Belonging matters.
  • Integration is a journey, not a checklist.
  • People thrive when they feel seen, supported, and connected.
  • Community doesn’t happen by accident—it’s built, nurtured, and shared.

What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a living, breathing community space shaped by thousands of conversations, countless acts of kindness, and a shared belief that we are stronger together.
