Have you seen or heard the word Stammtisch being used across the German speaking part of Switzerland? Let’s take a look at what it means and how you can take advantage of this cultural activity to enhance your German speaking. Read on to find out about the two Stammtisch groups that are currently taking place at the LiLi Centre.
What is Stammtisch?
Stammtisch is a word that describes a regular meeting of a group of people, to catch-up and chat informally. This usually takes place at a bar, restaurant, cafe, or communal meeting point. The literal translation of Stammtisch is ‘regulars table’.
Stammtisch has been present throughout modern history in many German speaking countries, and today is still frequently used to advertise a casual get-together by a group of people. It’s common in Switzerland to also see Stammtisch utilised as a forum for international residents to practice speaking and learning German. People come along to meet new friends, learn German or practise what they already know. Usually there is no set agenda, just casual and informal conversation about any topic you like!
Benefits of joining a Stammtisch to learn German
Learning a new language can be hard, whatever your situation, and it takes time and effort to feel like you’re making some progress. Whilst structured classes provide you with the guidance to learn grammar from a teacher, there’s also huge benefit in taking part in something like a Stammtisch. Especially in Switzerland where you may be trying to learn High German rather than Swiss German (or perhaps the other way round).
Here are some of the benefits of taking part in a Stammtisch to practise German:
- ✅ Focus on speaking, which is often a fast way to improve your language skills
- ✅ Open and informal environment, allowing you to ask questions and make mistakes
- ✅ Represents more ‘real world’ situations compared to a classroom
- ✅ A great way to meet new people
- ✅ Encourages you to practice speaking about topics you enjoy
- ✅ Can increase your confidence so you can speak to locals
