Spring into spring

A successful Luzern Fasnacht season is over, the Sports holidays have finished, the kids are back at school, and you may have done your last skiing and snowboarding of the season, so what is next?

Spring, glorious spring! The radiant season is almost here and with it lots of outdoor activities, nature, fields of wildflowers, trees in blossom, sunshine and new beginnings.

Outdoor activities

Hiking, cycling and in-line skating are popular if you are ready to peel off the snow gear and get back into your sports gear.

Hiking:

The top of the mountains still have snow so hiking is for lower alpine areas, around lakes or tours through cities at this time. For hiking around Luzern see these great hiking tips from Luzern Tourismus AG including the Tell Trail, the top 10 best walks, panoramic walks, family walks, walks by the water and cableway walks. The focus is on summer hiking but most will be accessible in spring as well.

Here is an extensive list: Best Trails in Luzern by AllTrails for trails in and around Luzern with many reviews.

Cycling:

Here are some tips on Cycling in Switzerland and Cycling around Lake Lucerne from the LiLi Centre.

The Stadt Luzern has information on increasing cycling use in the city: Velofahren. The page is in German.

If you are looking to sell or buy a bike the Velobörse is where you can register at info@proveloluzern.ch to sell a bike or find the bike you are looking for. The next one in Luzern is on 18 March at the Musikpavillon – near the Schiffrestaurant Wilhelm Tell. This page is also in German but remember DeepL is your friend.

In-line skating:

Also known as rollerblading, in-line skating is big in Switzerland, particularly around the lakes. Vierwaldstättersee is no exception – see these posts, oldies but goodies, for some great tour tips near Luzern: Inline Skating tour Weggis to Vitznau and Beautiful inline tour at Lake Aegeri.

Here are some tips from Luzern Tourismus AG: 5 activities for the spring including hiking, cycling, inline skating, jogging and discovering Luzern at your own pace.

Nature and its colours:

Where to begin? Soon there will be more sun, the flowers and trees start blossoming in a profusion of colours, bees, their furry bumble bee relatives and a myriad of butterflies will be in your gardens and on your balconies.

One of the most beautiful traditions that we see every year in Luzern is the floral decorations adorning the Chapel Bridge that began in earnest in 2006. Hanging the boxes is generally timed, weather dependent, with the Luzern City Run (Stadtlauf). This year it will be on 29 April: Luzerner Stadtlauf.

Here you can find the Best Wildflower Trails in Lucerne and here you can learn about Discovering and Protecting the Wildflowers of Mount Rigi.

And spring means it’s gardening time. See this post by the LiLi Centre for the best places to go for your garden: It’s Gardening Time!

Easter:

Easter decorations, eggs and paraphernalia are already in most supermarkets. This year the Easter long weekend is from 7-10 April.

If you are looking for things to do over the Easter break, check out these tips from the LiLi Centre: Easter in and around Lucerne.
