Sörenberg – a great outing for the family.

| Living in Luzern #familytraveling by Paula Ramsay | I love skiing, but I’m always a little wary about the first day of the season – who remembers where we stashed all the ski gear in the spring?  Do the kids still fit into anything?  Will my rusty muscles survive the first few turns?

Well, I may have found the solution – this year we ended up having our first ski day of the year at Sörenberg, and it was perfect.

From Lucerne, on public transit, it only took us an hour to get to Sörenberg.  A short walk from the bus stop to the rental shop (Stockli Outdoor Sports), in the village, and we were quickly outfitted with rental ski gear for the children, and ready to hit the slopes.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and the snow was soft.  Perfect conditions for the first day back!  We were very grateful to find an excellent ski instructor from the Sörenberg ski school, Aline, to introduce us to the hill and help us find our ski legs.  We started at the great children’s area, which has a rope tow and a magic carpet for the littlest skiers.  Aline helped our youngest, who is five years old, figure out his snow plow, and then we were ready for the T-bar.  With Aline’s friendly help and skillful instruction (and pocket chocolates), both of our children were happily enjoying runs on the T-bar, in the sunshine and soft snow.

For lunch, Ueli showed us the way to a very charming restaurant on the mountain (Ski-Hütte Schwarzenegg). We enjoyed delicious alpine fare – my children particularly reveled in the amazingly long breadsticks, while I have never had such delicious crispy onions on my Älplermagronen – while listening to (I am not making this up) beautiful yodelling in the next room.   The children ran out to play in the snow while we finished up our wine.

Once warmed up and refuelled, we headed out for more fun in the snow.  I took our youngest son back to the Kinderland, where he would have happily done runs with the magic carpet until the sun set.  Meanwhile, my husband and older son headed out to see the rest of the hill, which is surprisingly expansive.  Highlights, for my husband, included the beautiful view and a chance to get in some good telemark turns and, for my son, the discovery of some fantastically bumpy trails in the woods.  We finally had to drag both kids off the slopes, and they quickly fell asleep on the Post bus, heading home.

It was a great first day back on the slopes – I’m thinking we might make this a family tradition.

Thank you Sörenberg!
