Referendum results – September 23

As promised here are the results of the referendums, of note nationwide only 37% of the population turned up to vote.

The first three are the national referendums and are in regard to:

Bundesbeschluss über die Velowege sowie die Fuss- und Wanderwege – Federal decree about bike paths as well as pedestrian and hiking paths.

Over 70% of voters voted in favour of this initiative, meaning that cities will now be receiving help from the national budget towards building new and improving current bike trails in cities and surroundings.

Both referendums for more sustainable food sources were turned down.

The first was the people’s initiative “Für gesunde sowie umweltfreundlich und fair hergestelle lebensmittel (Fair Food Initiative)” – For healthy, ecological and fairly produced foods.

The fair food initiative collected around 40% of positive votes.

The second food people’s initiative “Für Ernährungssouveränität. Die Landwirtschaft betrifft uns alle” – For food sovereignity. Agriculture affects all of us.

The farmers’ initiative only received 32% of votes in favour.

What is interesting to note is the clear divide between the French speaking part of Switzerland who voted in favour of both of these initiatives and the rest of the country who voted against. Thus reinforcing the notion of the “rösti-graben” divide.

Both motions put forward on cantonal level were rejected:

People’s initiative “Für eine hohe Bildunsqualität im Kanton Luzern” – For higher education quality in the canton of Lucerne.

This initiative was rejected by 68,9% of the voters.

The second people’s initiative is “Vorwärts mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr” – Forward with public transport.

72% of voters also rejected this initiative.

Finally the city of Luzern put forward two motions which were both accepted.

The first one is the “Genereller Entwässerungsplan (GEO)” – General Drainage Plan (part 1)

Received a staggering 88,9% of positive votes.

The second motion is “Teilrevision des Reglements für eine nachhaltige städtische Energie-, Luftreinhalte- und Klimapolitik (Energiereglement)” -a partial revision of the regulations regarding a sustainable energy, clean air and ecological policy.

This motion received 59,7% of positive votes.

In the canton of St Gallen a contentious vote was put forward and accepted, it is now forbidden to wear a burka in this canton. It is now the second canton after the Tessin to have implemented the ban.

The next referendum will take place on November 25.
