At Living in Luzern, it is always good to hear about restaurants that we haven’t tried before. When one of our readers, Duygu Kanibar, told us that she had tasted the best Chinese food in the Luzern area in the Jia Lu restaurant in Hochdorf we had to pass on her recommendation. This is what she has to say:
‘When you are new to a city or a country the first years are usually spent learning about new places including restaurants. For us restaurants are one of the biggest challenges in Luzern since we moved here. It gets a bit harder when you have a picky child like ours. Normally my husband and I love trying new restaurants but here in Switzerland after couple of bad experiences we now prefer trying recommended restaurants. Jia Lu was recommended by our friends Joanna and Nicholas who also enjoy good food. Thanks to them I can say I’ve eaten Chinese food in Switzerland now.
The restaurant Jia Lu has a great atmosphere and they have two private rooms for smaller and bigger groups that want to experience a more Chinese style sitting.
Turkish people have a saying “Keep what you’ve eaten or drunk to yourself! Tell me what you’ve seen!” I have never been a believer of this saying. For me the first part has a very big importance! So here what we had: We started with beef and vegetable Dim Sum and shrimp Wonton Soup – they were both delicious. We ordered the signature dish Kola Chicken and Crispy Beef (apparently we were very hungry) – they were both very tasty. For our 3 year old daughter we picked friend rice with chicken from Kids’ Menu. I think one main dish would have been enough but we didn’t know. I also have to mention their special cold tea drinks. If you love tea you will definitely enjoy them. As if we were not full enough, we felt that we must try a dessert (recommended) we had the white and dark chocolate mousse, it was again yummy!
As for the prices, they cannot be compared to Brooklyn China Town when you are in Switzerland! We thought it was well spent for a tasty Chinese dinner. We drove to the restaurant but we decided to take the train next time since there is a train station right behind the restaurant (1 min. walk).
Another plus for the restaurant is their very attentive owner and workers. Everybody was very friendly and they all speak English! We are definitely going back…’
Jia Lu is at Haupstrasse 21, 6280 Hochdorf(map) less than 30 minutes drive from Luzern and can be reached using the S9 train which runs every half hour from Luzern (also takes 30 mins). The restaurant is open for lunch from 11:00 to 14:00 Thu – Fri and for dinner from 17:30 to 23:30 Thu – Sun. Reservations can be made on 041 811 9050.
Please note that the restaurant is currently closed for holidays and reopens on Friday 2nd August at 17:30.
