Mental health is increasingly becoming a prominent challenge, with people struggling to cope with the pressures of everyday life, stressful events, or anything in-between. For internationals in particular, living abroad far away from family, friends, home comforts, and often the familiarity of their native language can create an environment that is ripe for the development of mental health challenges. Whilst it is important that everyone focuses on nurturing and prioritising themselves, there may also be times when we need a bit of extra help.
In a recent health survey by the Federal Statistical Office, swissinfo.ch says that “29% of young women between the ages of 15 and 24 are suffering from mental distress,” an increase of 10% compared to 2017. These numbers are rising, and the organisations and institutions which can offer help are playing more of an important role.
Switzerland has developed many resources to support the growing need for mental health help, however there is still a long way to go. The country and culture has a strong work ethic, which can often lead to stress and burnout when not managed carefully, and can be difficult when coupled with a ‘taboo’ around talking about mental health. This, combined with a large international community, make it all the more important to share and highlight where people can go for help when they are in need.
