This coming Sunday, the 18th edition of the Lucerne Swiss Marathon will be taking place with a new twist which may have a consequence for anyone wishing to travel. For the first time instead of twice running the loop from the transport museum to Horw and back, runners will be running all the way to Alpnachstadt and back. Whereas this is undeniably a much nicer circuit for the marathon runners it will mean that even more roads will be closed to traffic.

This will affect both private and public transport. You can find which buses will be running and to where by clicking here. Road traffic in the city of Lucerne and the municipalities of Horw, Hergiswil, Stansstad and Alpnach will be severely affected between 06:30 and 16:00 on the day of the race. Various roads (including the Seebrücke, Horw peninsula, Seestrasse, Lopperstrasse and Brünigstrasse) will be closed. You can find out more by clicking here.
As a small compensation there will be a free boat shuttle between Lucerne railway station and the Swiss Museum of Transport (finish line) available to all runners and fans from 07:00 – 16:45. Departure from Lucerne railway station (bridge 5) to the Museum of Transport. Departure every 12 minutes (time required: 30 minutes).
It is a fun event to watch and runners really do appreciate being cheered along. As well as the 42 km marathon, there also is a half marathon run, a 10 km run as well as a charity race. Downtown Lucerne but the other towns will be sure to have a festive vibe. The weather will be a mix of sun and rain and the temperatures will be on the slightly cooler side, so dress warmly.
Also don’t forget that on the night of Saturday to Sunday the clocks will be going back an hour.
You can find out more about the marathon at their official website and, if you have decided to sign up, it’s not too late. You can join their waiting list or go to their swapping online platform.
