Get your skates on!

Looking for something to do with the children now that the nights are drawing in and there’s a real nip in the air? Then there is no better place than Luzern to try your hand (or feet!!) at ice skating as in Luzern.

Hermitage on Ice

From 8th November until the 2nd February the open air ice rink at the Seehotel Hermitage is open.  This is the fourth year that the rink has been open and is always popular due to its beautiful lakeside location.  Skates and skating aids (polar bears for children) can be hired on site and there is even a small kiosk to buy a warm drink and snack.

Live on Ice at the KKL

From the 28th November until the 5th January Europaplatz, the square in front of the KKL is transformed into a winter wonderland complete with sparkling lights and a giant Christmas tree.  Skates can be hired and there is an area to store bags should you need to.  (website)

Swiss Life Arena

My personal favourite is the Swiss life arena, Eisfeldstrasse 2,  which is open daily from November until March from 09:00-18:00 (until 22:00 at weekends).  Ice skates, skating aids, hockey sticks and helmets are available for hire.  On the first Sunday of every month, they host a special family play afternoon from 13:00-16:00 when children can try out a variety of games on the ice.  My top tip, especially if you have older children is to pop down on a Friday and Saturday when the ice rink is transformed into a dance floor complete with glitter ball, disco lights and dance music (some nights with live DJs).  There is even a lovely cafe upstairs, N’ice where those less confident on the ice can retreat for something to eat, a warm drink or even a glass of something sparkly!!
