The 2025 Eurovision Song Contest has officially arrived in Switzerland, in the vibrant city of Basel. The opening ceremony marked the start of the contest on Sunday 11th May, and the coming week is bound to be filled with celebrations across the city.
What is Eurovision?
The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is an annual competition organised by the European Broadcasting Union. A song and artist are chosen by participating countries, who then perform at the contest hosted in a different country each year. Acts perform in televised live shows: the First Semi-Final (Tuesday 13th May), the Second Semi-Final (Thursday 15th May) and the Final (Saturday 17th May). Performers are given scores guided by Eurovision rules, and in the end the act with the most wins the competition.
Traditionally the Eurovision winner hosts the next contest, and as Nemo, representing Switzerland, won in 2024 it is down to Basel to host the contest this year.
What is there to do in Basel this week?
“The ESC is more than just a music competition: it connects and inspires people across all borders,” says the website of Basel Eurovision. They have proven this by showcasing a huge variety of activities and celebrations in Basel throughout this week. From art, to music, to food and drink, and other cultural activities, the city is coming alive and there is plenty to see and get involved in.
The celebrations are divided across different parts of the city: EuroClub and Cafe, Eurovision Square, Eurovision Village, and Eurovision Street and Boulevard. Away from these main locations, museums, cafes, art galleries, and shops are putting on special events and displays for visitors and residents to enjoy.
