The sun is shining, the air warm, the nights aren’t freezing so if you have a garden, a terrace, balcony or even a window shelf it’s time to get your thumbs green.
If you’re looking for a shovel, a lawn mower or decide to build a shed then you’ll want to head to Landi, Hornbach, Jumbo or another d.i.y. store.
Once you’ve got your tools, it’s time to get your plants. Now you are spoiled for choice, although Coop and Migros offer a large assortment it would be a shame to go and visit one of the local gardening centres.
Heini Garten, close to the Kantonspital has a small but nice collection of plants.
The Luzerner Garten Centre sells many plants and boasts the largest tulip show in Switzerland which is on right now till mid-May.
Schwitter probably is the best known centre just off the highway at the Gisikon Root exit. They have a wonderful show garden and will be having a spring party this coming week-end and are offering a 10% discount on both Saturday and Sunday.
Hauernstein Garden Center is just a bit further down the road at the Baar exit, they also have a large collection of flowers and will be having a lawn maintenance workshop on April 5th as well as their spring party on the 5th and 6th of April.
The Stadtgartnerei is responsible for the maintenance of all the green areas around Luzern as well as the playgrounds. The good news for you is that you can pick up compost and earth for free from them and they sometimes even show up in various neighborhoods where you just have to bring your basket (or another container) to get your fill of compost.
Of course be sure to visit the Saturday market by the river where local farmers and gardeners will be selling their plant plugs ready to go into your garden.
Now there is no excuse to not get your hands dirty and have some fun gardening.
