Switzerland is know for its watches, chocolates and cheeses. But did you know it also boasts a rich landscape for castles? Here are a few nearby castles to Luzern.
Lenzburg Castle
Located about an hour`s drive from Luzern, Lenzburg Castle is one of the country`s oldest and most historic hilltop castles. Dating back to the 11th century, it played a role in many important events in politics and history across Europe. This attractive castle houses three exhibits inside its tower and dungeon. Admire the period furniture from medieval times to the 19th century, marvel at the culture of knighthood or stroll around the grounds and beautiful rose garden. Highlight for the children is the Kindermuseum, a play-area in the attic where kids can dress up as princesses and knights, and an arts and crafts corner. There are also a museum shop and cafeteria.
Open from April 1 to October 31, Tuesday through Sunday 10am until 5pm. Heidegg Castle
Nestled between sunny vineyards and lush chestnut trees, the romantic Heidegg Castle is about an hour away from Luzern. With the first part erected in the late 1100s, Heidegg grew and wrote history over eight centuries. On display are an exhibit on the castle`s history and several rooms showing furniture and family portraits. For the kids there is an amazing attic with a spectacular marble run and pillow fight area. Outdoors you will find a beautiful rose garden as well as a playground.
Open April 1 to October 31, Tuesday through Friday from 2pm until 5pm. Saturday, Sunday and general Holidays open 10am until 5pm. Hallwyl Castle
In just under one hour you`ll get to Hallwyl Castle, considered one of the most beautiful and romantic water castles. The foundation of the castle took place with the building of the tower in the late 12th century. About 150 years later, it was expanded into a moated castle. The exhibitions give insight into Hallwyl`s history and life there. There are also a cafeteria and museum shop. Guided tours are available.
Open April 1 until October 31 Tuesday through Sunday from 10am until 5pm. It costs 14.- CHF for an adult ticket or 10.- CHF if you are a for of 10 or more.
