Bergrestaurants with playgrounds

Sometimes, we just feel the need to enjoy some lovely Swiss mountain air, but the thought of taking the kids up the mountain does not inspire the peace and tranquillity we would be hoping for. There are also the days we have visitors who want to experience the beauty of the area, but we also need a way to keep the children entertained.

With that in mind, here’s our list of a number of mountain restaurants (Bergrestaurants) that are within close proximity to Luzern. They combine the stunning views of the area with excellent entertainment for the children. So while the kids enjoy some playtime, you can sit back, relax and enjoy a hot chocolate (or whatever tipple takes your fancy!).

Alpenhof Restaurant, Kussnacht-am-Rigi

This is a beautiful garden restaurant with stunning views over the lake towards Luzern. You can drive to Alpenhof restaurant and there is ample parking available. The play area here is big featuring trampolines, climbing frames and lots of play equipment. There is also a barn (part of the working farm) so the children may come across various livestock too. For the warmer mornings, the restaurant offers a good value Sunday brunch.

Schwendelberg restaurant, Mount Pilatus

The Schwendelberg restaurant is at the foot of Mount Pilatus and has just reopened, having been closed over the Winter period. Again, you can drive to this restaurant which you reach from a well signposted turn-off from the road between Horw and Hergiswil. Another stunning view awaits you over the lake but this time it’s in the directions of Burgenstock and Rigi. This is a great place to take visitors and children alike. There is an extensive outside play area and a collection of toys inside for the cooler days – a perfect win-win situation!

Restaurant Ristis, Engelberg-Brunni

Accessible all year, restaurant Ristis is reached via cable car from the base station in Engelberg. The recently renovated outside large play area offers something for children of all ages with plenty of attractions around, although the play area is not viewable from the restaurant terrace. There is an area for the smaller children and a larger area that comes into its own in the Summer. From the huge wooden climbing frame, water play area and summer toboggan run, you’ll even be tempted to take part yourself. There are also various stroller friendly walks from this station.

Sonnenberg Restaurant, Pilatus

Closer to home is the Sonnenberg restaurant in Kriens. Reachable by car or the little blue Sonnenberg train, which started running again on 25th March (CHF 10 return per adult and free for kids under 16) . Just a short walk down from the top station (where there is also a play area) is where you’ll find this restaurant. With a little train in the garden area and lovely views over Pilatus and Luzern this is a quick and easy escape to reach from the city. There is also a small inside play corner for the kids. Combine a trip up Sonnenberg on the train with a walk back down to the base station or the half way station with a stop at the restaurant for a refuel.

There are many more options for mountain restaurants in the area. These are just a few I have personally experienced. Feel free to share your experiences of these Bergrestaurants or any other child-friendly ones around, with us in the comments below.
