A nation with a love for the circus

Not only do the Swiss love going to the circus, but there are several Swiss circus dynasties that travel up and down the country with their shows every year and who will be stopping in or near Luzern in the coming months.

The first circus to come to town was the Circus Monti. This circus promotes young artists from around the world and has a very lyrical and poetic thread line through the whole show. They gave up having animals in their show many years ago. I watched them in Luzern back in March and absolutely loved it. Although the dates in Luzern are gone you can catch them in Zug from July 5 and 6.

The undisputed Swiss circus dynasty is the Knie family with no less than two circuses. The best known one is the Circus Knie, a classical circus by excellence, they have elephants and horses in their programme as well as international top acts. They will be performing at the Allmend from July 25 until August 10. This year they are celebrating “David Larible – the clown of clowns”.

The other circus that the family has is Salto Natale, which is run by Rolf and Gregory Knie this is more in the vain of Cirque du Soleil, also focusing on artists rather than animals. Their show Mirlando will be in Zürich from November 20 until January 4, but it is well worth the trip.

But this is not all, there also is the Circus Nock, who have a small traditional circus with the much beloved (by locals) Gaston and Roli clowns. They will be touring in Sursee on  June 13 to 15, then Baar June 17 & 18 and will be coming to Luzern from October 24 until November 2.

The Circus Royal will be performing this afternoon at 15:00 in Brunnen and at later dates (to be disclosed) in Luzern.

Plenty of circuses for you to discover in the coming months.
