This weekend the legendary Swiss festival of Fasnacht returns. Luzern will be completely transformed for six days of partying from Thursday to Tuesday. Following the big bang (called the Urknall!) at 5:00 on Thursday morning, which marks the start of Fasnacht, bizarre figures in fantastical masks and costumes will flood the streets and alleyways. Groups of musicians and large parades will entertain thousands of costumed revellers throughout the weekend at various locations around the city, this is a Swiss tradition that it would be very hard to miss and something you should definitely get fully involved with! As Fasnacht continues the main event on Saturday is the Mask Lovers Society (Fidelitas) Party held near the waterfront (Unter der Egg 6004). In recent years, this event has become a popular meeting place for carnival attendees and serves as a replacement for the legendary Fidelitas Ball which used to take place on Güdis Monday. The party starts at 13:30 and continues until 23:00. There is fun to be had by everyone and this includes seniors. On Saturday afternoon, from 13:30 to 17:30, the Grand Casino (Haldenstrasse 6, 6006) will be hosting the seniors carnival which is a great opportunity for the older attendees to have a dance and enjoy the festivities.

On Sunday (and up until Tuesday) there will be more carnival action but if you fancy something a bit different why not head down to the Shamrock Pub (Wagenbachgasse 3, 6004) where they will be showing England vs Ireland in the Guinness Six Nations Rugby Competition. This is sure to be an exciting event as the Irish travel to Twickenham seeking to clinch a second Triple Crown in three years after beginning the tournament with successive home wins over Scotland and Wales. The match will be starting at 16:00 but it could be a good idea to get there a bit early to get a table and a pint of Guinness before the kick off!
