HSK English Language School for Children

English language learning for native English speaking children

Is your child’s first language English? Then our English Language School at the Lili Centre, which has been certified by the Canton Luzern’s Heimatliche Sprach und Kultur (HSK) department, is the ideal place for your child to improve their language skills.

Our aim is to help native English-speaking children, who are attending Swiss public schools, to master the key English skills, who might be feeling under challenged in English lessons at the local schools.

It has been proven that children who enhance their native language also improve in German, but in addition to this, they establish their own identity, are able to communicate with family members, and obviously benefit if they return to their English roots at any time.

Native English-speaking children from ages 4-11 are able to attend these classes.  The course consists of reading, writing, listening, speaking, spelling, history and culture. Our teacher, Joanna Christen-Glennie, who is originally from Scotland and has been certified by the Canton, has designed a course using books, which are also used in English schools, based on the Nelson English Skills Courses from Oxford University Press.

The classes run for 12 weeks (in line with Lucerne’s public school schedules) and are held from 113.30-15.00 for 7-8 year olds and from 15.30-1700 for 9-11 years (may change depending on number of classes) on Wednesday afternoons.  Also, from 14.30-16.00 for 4-6 year olds on Thursday afternoons.

Class sizes range from 3 to 10 pupils.  All children will be assessed, and children from the 3rd class will be given a grade, which will be included as a separate subject on the Swiss school report.  A fee will be charged for each term, please contact the school coordinator regarding costs and registration.
